Das \u00fcber 12 Kilometer lange und 2,5 Meter hohe Bauwerk aus Stahl mit Betonfundamenten soll den Tagungsort des G8-Gipfels in Heiligendamm vom 6. bis 8. Juni 2007 abschirmen. Zum Treffen der Staats- und Regierungschefs der sieben gr\u00f6\u00dften Industrienationen und Russlands sind Sicherheitsvorkehrungen im Wert von \u00fcber 90 Millionen Euro geplant. Gut 70 Millionen Euro soll das Land Mecklenburg-Vorpommern zahlen. Der Bau des Zauns, wie auch die Ausrichtung des Gipfels an sich ist im Land Gegenstand hei\u00dfer Debatten \u00fcber Sinn und Nutzen des Treffens &#8211; vor allem wegen der hohen Kosten.
